CED in the History of Media Technology

Digital Equipment Corp. introduced the compact PDP-1 in 1960. At $120,000 this system was far less costly than the millions mainframe computers cost at that time. Plus the system could fit comfortably in the corner of a room and didn't require air conditioning. The PDP-1 could be operated by one person and featured a graphics CRT display that used a light pen. A PDP-1 at MIT became the first computer to run a videogame in 1962. Steve Russell programmed the MIT unit to play the game Spacewar which went on to be a standard DEC "diagnostic" program throughout the 1960's.
