The gramophone, patented by Emile Berliner in 1887, overcame the groove weakness problems encountered by Tainter through the use of a mastering process. The groove was first cut into a wax disc whose pattern was acid etched into a zinc record. The zinc record was then used to press hard rubber discs that the mechanism could play.
